The Vegvisir, also known as the runic compass, the Icelandic runes, or the Nordic compass comprised of eight rune staves, is a representation of protection and direction that was allegedly used as a compass by the Vikings. In Icelandic, the word vegvisir means "wayfinder" and "sign post."

There is much controversy over the Vegvisir's origins, despite the fact that it is sometimes referred to as the Viking compass and is sometimes linked to the travels the Vikings conducted throughout the globe during the Viking Age.

The Huld Manuscript, assembled by Geir Vigfusson in 1880, and The Galdrabok, another manuscript, are the only two sources that reference the Vegvisir.

The Vegvisir is only referenced in the Huld Manuscript as a sign of protection and direction in a single statement that roughly translates to "the wearer of this emblem will not lose his route during storms and poor weather, even if he does not know of his goal."
